His jealous thoughts and anger dropped away the instant he began to read.

I need to talk to you later. Go upstairs, count your paces along the landing. Then count them across your room to the joining wall. Then count them in the back room. Really want to talk about us but can’t.

Luke read it three more times. Want to talk about us. About us.

Us.

What did that mean?

He refused to go there. He wasn’t going to let his imagination rule him this time. He meant he wanted to talk about the work in the house. Us was probably the way they spoke in Cornwall.

To distract himself, Luke dumped his jacket and headed upstairs. He followed Peran’s instructions and counted the number of steps along the landing, effectively the depth of the house. He did the same in his bedroom, from the front-facing wall to the inner one and then carried on in the spare room to the back wall. He admired the new work around the window before he noticed that half the room was painted white. His decorator was making good progress.

Your decorator, not lover.

‘Yes, okay,’ he tutted. ‘What was the point of that?’

He looked at the notepad where he’d jotted the number of steps. He had counted twenty-two paces along the landing, front to back, but only twenty when pacing the bedrooms.

So? That was a distance of roughly three feet, he guessed. He’d probably miscounted.

It wasn’t until he repeated the exercise that he understood what the note had directed him to discover. He wondered if Peran had taken the Smartphone out of its box yet and ran to find his own.
